Cover of Agatha's JourneyThe 1820s and 1830s -- The American interior was opening up. But beyond the Ohio and Mississippi rivers was a place only for the most courageous of adventurers. Years before the great mass migrations to the West, a small and naive band of Irish immigrants set out from New York for California. In Northeastern Illinois, they met with disaster.

Agatha Wilson might have been just one of the multitudes of people swallowed up and forgotten in the American wilderness. But driven by the compulsion to save the soul of her daughter Sarah, she stayed on in the place where she died.

The last three years of Agatha's earthly life were spent as a recluse, near what is now downtown Naperville, Illinois. She survived by her Irish fortitude and the help of the nearby Potawatomi, who called her Left Alone Woman. Until she herself was claimed by the wilderness, Agatha jealously guarded her daughter’s grave, waiting for the appearance of a priest to sanctify it. Only long after her own death did she understand that her vigil to save Sarah had been unnecessary. Nevertheless, she remained among us to rescue Sarah's memory, and her own, from oblivion. Not until the 1990s was she able to reach out to someone who would listen and record her tale.

The author, Sandra Penrose, came from a career in computer science. Her objective upbringing and education had not prepared her for the presence of spirits in her new home in Illinois. After a series of frightening episodes, the agitated souls were brought under control. Only then could she detect the quieter spirit of Agatha, and her consuming need to tell her 170-year-old adventure story.
